Ilka met the singer at the concert in Bochum and asked questions for you…
NEGATIVE

Before Negative started rocking the Zeche Bochum with their new record Karma Killer, front man Jonne Aaron was so nice as to tell us a bit about Negative’s future.

Heavy-Metal: There were lots of things happening in the Band during the last year. Sir Christus left the band; you released a new album and started selling the first DVD. What were the last 12 months like for you?

Jonne Aaron: At the end it was a victory. We released our so far best album. Karma Killer was some sort of a turning point for us. On this tour we were basically everything, e.g. Mexico and Sweden, and now we’re here. And at this point of the tour we are who we are. We don’t need a new guitarist or anything. 2008 was one of the most stressful years of my life. We made a new deal with the band. Nobody knows about it yet, but it’s something really big. We have the opportunity to release our CDs and so on… you’ll hear about us. Soon…

HM: Can you tell a little more?

JA: We started recording a few demos with new songs. At the end of 2009 there’s going to be a new NGT-record in stores.

HM: Karma Killer and In The Eye Of The Hurricane were released at Edel Records.

JA: It will be a completely new record label with the next CD.

HM: Can you say something about that?

JA: It’s going to be the biggest we had so far.

HM: So what about the rumours about the deal with Warner Records?

JA: Unfortunately, I can’t say anything so far. My lips are sealed. We’ve been at Indie-lables ever since our first record. We did everything on our own. It was really hard work. For the band as well as for the label. Our deal with Roadrunner Records was a good start for Europe, but we’re always looking into the future. Everyone in the band is absolutely standing behind Negative, and we believe in Negative more than ever. At the moment there’s a very inspiring atmosphere in the Band. We’re trying new methods, Snack, for example, has his part in songwriting now. Usually, pre-production is very minimalist. We’re trying out things on the acoustic guitar and then we’re collecting the best ideas. But this time we started off very carefully. It’s hard to explain, but it’s definitely very exciting.

HM: I had the chance to hear a little part of your sound check. Your voice sounds different than during the last tour. You also tried new ways of singing on Karma Killer.

JA: Yes, that’s going to be enforced in the future. I like going to my limits and testing them out again and again. At the moment there are a few songs I don’t like that much anymore because they don’t fit my mood anymore. Even though it’s quite stressful at the moment, I feel very balanced. For the new record, I wish for more ‘beauty’, something very special. It’s not good to be aggressive all the time. Of course it’s a part of Rock’n’roll, but I want more for our next album. Something that captures you. Last night I practiced playing something on the piano. I’m very fascinated by that instrument.

HM: Could you imagine playing the piano on stage?

JA: Hopefully, when I got better. Last night I built up a mini-studio in the bus and recorded my so called lesson. At the moment I’m rather playing like a six year-old girl with a two-fingers-system (laughing). But it’s fun. I also want to develop as a musician.

HM: Sealed is a song by Larry’s old Band Shannon. Did you ever think about having Larry sing that song for Negative?
JA: Singing?

HM: Yes, because Larry told me in an earlier interview that he used to sing at Shannon.
JA: Yes, he did. We toured with Shannon when I got to know Larry. I still remember that they played the song. But I can tell you that it was totally different. Larry’s got that deep vibrato-voice. Maybe you should ask Larry. It’d be easier for because then I’d had more time for myself. (laughs) [Note: I’m quite sure he means that it’d be easier for him when Larry sings the song.] But I believe he hasn’t been singing any lead-vocals for quite a long time. There’s a difference in singing lead- or backing-vocals. But who knows…

HM: Your DVD In the Eye of the Hurricane was also released in Germany. Are you content with your first DVD?

JA: I think it’s a good DVD for a start. It’s a nice history lesson about Negative for everyone who doesn’t know the band and also for those who do. It was supposed to be something special for the fans. We tried to keep the DVD as honest as possible. Either you like it or you don’t. I saw it only twice. I really believe it’s a good DVD for a start. But the next one is going to be bigger. That’s why I don’t believe that there’s going to be a new DVD until Negative are bigger. It’s going to be the next step.
HM: You said Karma Killer is the best record for you. What is it that makes the record so special for you?
JA: I think Karma Killer is more dynamic. And of course you always feel like the newest record is the best one. When we started we were very young. You can find a development on all of our records. That’s why the last album always is the best record. We became better musicians and we can understand some things better than before. It’s really hard to say which songs are the best ones. Each record is a mirror to its time, as well as the songs. It’s really depending on what music you listened to during that time, or what moved you. At the moment I’m really into melodious things.

HM: Is that one of the reasons for playing Lost Soul only as an instrumental version on your last tour?

JA: We wanted to do something special for the fans. When the fans are coming to our shows, it would be totally boring to play the songs in exactly the same versions as they are on the records. It’s more interesting for the fans and of course for us, too.
HM: How did you get to the title? Do you believe in Karma?

JA: Yes, I do believe in Karma. Usually the title of a record comes up during the mixing. This time it was important to us to look ahead. During the last tour there were some unpleasant moments that, after all, didn’t give us any choice but to go our way as we did it. When we went to the studio with Karma Killer, we just wanted to leave behind all the negative things of the past and only focus on the future. It’s our live, and Negative is our baby. We owe ourselves and our fans to be careful with it. We have a mission and it’s not completed… (laughs)
HM: Some time ago you had your first gig in South America, together with London After Midnight. What was it like for you?

JA: The audience was really demanding. Very exciting. But I liked it.
HM: Your fans must be very different?

JA: Yes, right from the beginning people started shouting ‚London, London’. But that changed in the course of the concert and we got lots of good feedback and won some fans. The next time we will be touring ourselves, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil. And who knows when Northern America follows…
HM: When you heard the calls for London After Midnight, was it something like a challenge for you?

JA: Yes, I enjoyed it!
HM: Enjoyed it?
JA: Yeah, sometimes I’m a little perverted (laughs). In a way I enjoyed it. If you perform somewhere for the very first time, you have to start right at the beginning again. It’s a real challenge – seeing whether you can draw the people to your side. It’s nice.

HM: …if you make it.

JA: Yeah, but whatever. Everyone can do what they want. In a way, I enjoyed it, but on the other hand it was quite irritating because the fans of London after Midnight were really fanatic. They threw things after me.
HM: Did your view on music change ever since playing in Negative? Can you actually enjoy music?

JA: Yes, or course. I like going to concerts when I’m at home. I just let myself flow then. Music has such a huge influence on me. I’m not interested in, how good are they as musicians or did they forget any note and so on. I’m on vacation for the moment.
HM: On the DVD you also played in some really small venues. What’s easier for you, the small or the big venues?
JA: That depends. It’s like having sex. Sometimes it’s nice having foreplay, sometimes you want something else. It’s the same with concerts. It’s fun to play during the festival season, it’s outside and there are many details that make the gig interesting for me. Starting with the first idea, then to the studio recordings and up to the actual tour.
HM: Giving Up is the next single. Is it also going to be released in Germany and is there going to be a video for it?

JA: We made a video for Giving Up. But something went in between. We have a video, but it’s more for the fans. It’s more like a live-clip. But next year there’s going to be a video from the new album.

Jeśli chodzi o klip, to nie mam pojęcia. Nic nie znalazłam na necie, albo o czymś nie wiem, albo jeszcze go nie ma.
