“Having awoken famous” after the single release “The moment of our love” in 2003, the Finnish guys from “Negative” have grown up musically, having remained dare-devil teens in a soul. They still make uproarious parties after the concerts and throw TV sets out of the hotel window. Nowadays “Negative” enjoy the deserved fame: their albums steadily hit top places in charts, and their last album “Karma Killer’ released in May of 2008, gave the band, loved in Europe and Asia, prospect of a tour in the distant South America. The lead-singer Jonne Aaron Liimatainen ( favourite of girls aged 13-18 ) agreed with joy to talk with the Russian journalists, and, inspired with unlimited time, given for the interview, we closed ourselves in the backstage area of the club before the band’s evening gig. Jonne turned out to be wonderful company, radiated powerful positive energy, fascination and a real childish sincere spontaneity. By the way, it needs to be noted, whatever gossips were around the band, even the idlest spiteful critics become silent when it comes to Jonne – it`s difficult to say spiteful things about him.
This year Negative parted with the guitarist Sir Christus. As far as I know, you were long-term friends. What was the reason to make that decision?
Jonne: Christus couldn`t control himself and go on working with us. His private problems affected all of us. ( the source close to the band assert that the musician is unable to cope with his addiction to drugs, - the author note ) We discussed the situation a few times, gave him a chance to change his behaviour, but… Christus made his choice, he just ceased attending the rehearsals. At some point, his leaving was the best solution of the problem.
You said that “Karma Killer” is a very positive album. Then what is a song like “Motherfucker”(just like you) doing on there?
Jonne: We always have something on each of our albums to shock the public, to break the definite bounds of genres. “Motherfucker” from Karma Killer is a three fingers sign, addressed to a new generation of rock-bands like Lovex and so on, who hatched out not that long ago. It`s an old-fashioned way to express one’s own opinion of them.
Is it addressed to anyone in particular?
Jonne: This song is connected with definite events. At that moment I was getting furious. It was the time we went through that Christus problem. And in my own life there were many important happenings…
When I was composing that song, it seemed as if the spirit of Axl Rose went into me directly from Los-Angeles. By the way, I associated with him in reality too. Axel was always one of my heroes and I had a chance to phone him. It was a year ago. Exactly after that call, I wrote “Motherfucker”.
In almost all of your clips there are not any subjects: videos just show the band – at a studio or somewhere else – performing a song. Have you ever tried to change the state of affairs?
Jonne: If I had the power, the videos would be much more interesting. But nowadays our label only cares about our image, videos and everything. In the future I`d like to do something like my fave video “November rain”. Yes, I`m again about “Guns’n’Roses”. I like everything Axl does. He is a genius! I`d like to do something similar, but with the Negative style. In any case, there must be lots of pretty girls in our clips, that’s for sure! And completing the Guns N Roses topic, I wanna say, that the only gig I would love to see badly before I die is Guns’N’Roses in it`s first line-up.
To all appearances, you won`t die too soon…
Jonne; Who knows. I have two more years yet for sure. And then, who knows…
Are you seriously going to die in two years?
Jonne: Maybe it`s an old rock’n’roll cliché but there are so many musicians who died at the age of 27! It`s a kinda crisis age for me. The first crisis happened a year ago when I turned 24. It seems to me that those events that happened to me, many people haven`t experienced for all their lives.
It looks like you went to see some fortune-teller who frightened you with death at a young age.
Jonne: It wasn`t a fortune-teller but my grandma. She was telling fortunes by card and said that my life would be full of events. And there are a lot of negative things and different bad temptations around me. And it`s true, there were many dirty gossips that I`m addicted to alcohol and take drugs! But my grandma couldn`t know about it. That fortune-telling was pretty sinister… I had my hair stood on end because of those words! But as she said, I had the best card at the end. It means that my life will be like a “roller coaster”, but if I go directly to my aim, everything will be good.
Don`t you think that all those fortune-tellings make people like zombies?
Jonne: On the one hand, I don`t believe in that but on the other hand I want to believe in it. I want to believe that everything will be very good.
By the way, during the concerts, it seems like you are somewhere in another world. Tell me the truth: do you perceive at least anything that`s going on in the audience?
Jonne: I have never taken drugs! I don`t want to know anything about that shit. So many people have stuck in that bog… For me, being on the stage is the great pleasure, it`s like your best orgasm repeating itself hundred times!
Being in that state of “stage orgasmic delight” do you see people around you?
Jonne: Sometimes. But I don`t believe in what I see. I believe in what I feel. I like to suck energy the public is full of.
So, you are a vampire?
Jonne: maybe, a kind of. I`m a vampire, though, I don`t like all that gothic stuff. But probably I`m rather a vampire…a rock’n’roll vampire. Once, when we were on the European tour, in Germany one girl appeared at each of our concerts showing her naked tits. We had 16 gigs in Germany, and every time I was like “what the hell she`s here again?” It`s all funny, of course… But not 16 times in a row!
That girl probably had read a quantity of your frank interviews about your liking for naked women`s breasts.
Jonne: (abruptly confused) Oh… maybe. She did her mission excellently, because later many girls followed her example. And once I saw such wonderful tits that I totally forgot the lyrics. And it was in the middle of the romantic ballad! I lost my memory, I couldn`t take my eyes off them!
Doesn’t it piss you off that many young girls go to the shows just to see you but not to hear Negative?
Jonne: I don`t care about the reason for which they buy tickets to our shows. The main thing is that they buy the tickets. Of course, it`s nice when the public sing the songs along with me. But if someone wants to pay only to see me – they are welcome. I`m a part of that circus on the stage. The circus theme was intentionally chosen for the album “Anorectic”… So I have to be a monkey in a cage everybody comes to look at. Although, I don`t even know who attracts more fans, me or Jay. We have an extremely attractive drummer.
I myself don`t find him that attractive.
Jonne: well, really! Perhaps you haven`t viewed him properly. He goes to a gym every day. And believe me, his “thing” in his pants… It`s really impressive!
It looks like you try to regulate his private life!
Jonne: We are old friends, have been from the school time. So why don`t I boost him? He has a wonderful body, you know, and people can come to the Negative concerts specially to see our drummer. When I get old and fat, Jay will be still in the prime of life. And then we can put the drum kit into the foreground of the stage.
Do you intend to be a rock-star and an idol of teens at the age of 50?
Jonne: I dunno. But I hope that Negative will not be worse than The Rolling Stones these days. That we`ll still go on tour and perform at stadium. I`d like to believe very much that soon there will be a machine invented, which could ensure eternal life to everyone who wishes. Then I`ll be the first in the queue for experimentation. I`ll exchange my worn heart, liver and other things for new ones. I`ll have to have a kinda opening to watch how those work in there. So that it could be possible to replace the battery when it discharges itself. That`s my plan. But if it doesn`t work and we will become dinosaurs of Rock’n’Roll – it`s also good. To become a legend, it is not necessary to die at 27. I hope that the “damnation 27” won`t work with me and I won`t be run over by a car or anything like that. As soon as I`m 27, I`ll lock myself up at home for a year. I won`t go on tour and won`t write new songs. I`m afraid of that age a lot, I`m afraid of dying at the age of 27.
I think that love of your fans will save you.
Jonne: Yeah, I`ll really need positive energy. So, be ready to send one to me in two years. Exactly at that age Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison died… ( and more Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Brian Jones – an author note)
Your brother Tommi is a manager of Negative. Does it in any way badly affect your family relations?
Jonne: Sometimes. Here is the example. I thought of a subject of a video for “Giving up!” and me and producer shot the clip. Did a cool cutting of child`s photos of band-members for our fans. And I was happy with how good it turned out. But Tommi didn`t like the idea and he said “No, we can`t release it!”. And we had a fight. I didn`t speak to him for a couple of weeks after that. So, quite a few tense moments happen. But in general, it`s good to work with him, I can trust him entirely, we are brothers, one blood. On the whole, there are good moments and bad ones, as with everything else, though.
Many Finnish musicians have their own business. Have you ever thought about anything like that?
Jonne; Business is a minor matter for me. Although it can`t be denied that in business big money can be involved. Just for that purpose, we have Tommi, so that he could care about a financial part of the matter and we won`t be left beggars. Negative has it`s own label. I personally don`t like to think about the practical side. Am I Bill Gates? But on the other hand, I like to be well informed about everything. For example, I adore thinking up something new for our merchandise goods with the Negative logo. But it has got nothing to do with business. I don`t like the word “business” and don`t seek to become the richest man in the world. I don`t need my own penthouse with a pool or something.
Of course, you have a flat with a sauna – what else can a Finnish guy wish for!
Jonne: Yes, you`re right. That`s my concept concerning luxury: a roof overhead and enough money to pay my phone bills.
Don`t you feel that show-business partly controls your life? Your whole day is scheduled: when to get up, when to eat, when to do an interview and so on…
Jonne: No, I don`t feel it. I`ve been living for the band for 11 years and have never felt tired of that life. Of course, at times I need to stay alone, but I have my own ways to relax.
When you are on stage you look quite impressive; chains, pendants, glitters, scarves, make-up. And how do you look like off stage?
Jonne: I like tight and close-fitting clothes for stage. I mean tight trousers. I think, it comes from my stage mood. I don`t look like that when I go out somewhere. But for me, going on stage it`s like being ready for a fight for which I must put on fighting armour. Like Indians paint their faces before fighting. I have my favourite stage clothes; the white and black frock-coats. They were designed for the video “In my heaven”, and when the video was done, I bought them from the designer.
That clothes must have been presented to you, in that case!
Jonne: Oh, it`s only two coats, the little nothings. Moreover, I`m a guy, how could I ask for the clothes for free? It would not have been nice. But when I`m at home I like to stay naked. So I don`t have any house clothes. I don`t like wearing pants, they squeeze my most important organ, you know, and it`s not good for the sperm quality.
It`s prejudices, Jonne!
Jonne: I`ve read a lot about negative consequences of wearing tight underclothes. I often feel aches over here (he points at the place below the navel – the author note). I was operated over here seven years ago: inside the skin bag – yes, exactly in there, there was liquid started collecting. I had to see doctors. Do you want me to show you the scar? (Jonne leaves the belt fastened and gets the trousers a bit down to show that ill-fated scar – the author note). At first I was afraid that it was cancer: at my first check-up, I was told that the swelling might be malignant. But what an amusing operation it was! They put me on the table, fixed hands and legs ( on the legs there were some weird plastic bags put on). They gave me a local anaesthetic and then I saw a group of the students coming in, led by the doctor, and he started to comment on the process of my operation. And I was lying on the table with a naked… you know what… and smiling silly. What else could I do in that situation?
In one of the summer interviews you said that you had done some new stuff for the next album. But “Karma Killer” was released only in May of this year…
Jonne: I always want to be one step ahead. Yes, we are doing some material for our next album. Maybe, we`ll change something but now it`s too early to try to predict – the future will show.
The Russian organizers have planned to get you to Russia on 8th of March, as a present to all girls for International Women`s day. How do you like it?
Jonne: Great! It`ll be a significant day! In Russia we always have wonderful gigs. And I am happy to have a chance to go back to Russia. I`ll try to think of something interesting as a present for the girls. It might be an exclusive acoustic song. And something more.
